Map projections have historically been exploited to inflate the size of the British Empire. In this day and age this just seems like a really petty move. Does the size of Greenland in Mercator projection threaten me? No…? But why is this map solidified in my mind as the right image of the world?
Why does this look so wrong?
I don’t really like that. I decided that it is our turn to exploit maps and reclaim how the world looks.
To make things right I made a map where every country is scaled to be the exact same size of 1348345 km2 so every country gets equal representation. Did you know that this number is the average area of a country under Mercator projection? This can be found under the equal tab.
To make things even more right I decided to give you the power to change the size of any country and shape your own map. Click diy to distort the map so it is ready for you to modify. Make your favorite country really really big and explode. Or make it really small and hide it from everyone so no one gets to see it. (Cartograms are hard and do funny things sometimes. If you make a country smaller before making it bigger the world will go back to normal again.)
